The Cathedral is accessible from other Cathedral planets, or the Ship Portal after collecting an Artifact, drinking an Aetherdew, or talking to Dune Dredger Winston. The enemies here hit very hard, taking out even maxed-out characters in just a couple of hits.
The portals at the end take you to other Cathedral planets. Cathedral towns contain Faust and a Creation Machine in addition to the usual stuff; however, they do not possess Gear Chalices (or Item Chalices on Challenge Level 1+), so Cathedral planets, though they are excellent for character leveling, are useless for gear leveling.

Cathedral Shards fly about the planet dealing 35 damage on contact. It is important to note that the path of every shard describes a circle of varying radius, so if you take time to examine the pattern of a room you will know when they are going to come around again.
The only ranged enemy, Cthu, shoots horizontal beams that deal a lot of damage and inflict Burn. Stay to the sides of any Cthu you come across to make it easier to dodge their attacks.
Both the tanky Cathedral Guardian and the rather squishy Cthu can be taken out from a distance without them attacking you if you are careful enough. Doing this will help you a lot as a ranged character since over-aggroing is deadly anyway.
It is highly advised to slowly go through the map, picking out one monster at a time. If you manage to get multiple monsters on your trail, run to a previously cleared area to defeat the Cthus' out of the hoard. Then you can get the Cathedral Gaurdians easily, because they are extremely slow. A good idea for Cathedral Gaurdians is to have a combat chip like Cluster Bombs, as this can rack up damage even if you have a slow, or low damage weapon.
The hoppy Experiments act similar to the Dunebug, except hop in random directions and much more often. Stay on the same surface as an Experiment to avoid getting falled on or having a hard time with it hopping around.
Challenge level 1 of The Cathedral increases the health, damage and in some cases speed of the enemies.
Challenge level 2 of The Cathedral further increases the health, damage and in some cases speed of the enemies.
Challenge level 3 of The Cathedral further increases the health, damage and in some cases speed of the enemies.
